The rock climbing in Sussex takes place on Southern Sandstone, a unique and unusual rock type found in very few locations around the UK. As sandstone is a delicate and fragile rock this means that climbers have to be particularly environmentally aware when climbing on these irreplaceable crags, however this care taken is rewarded by the quality and range of routes available to climbers on these rocks.
As well as being of interest to climbers, the sandstone crags of Sussex are also of specific significance to botanists who have found that the flora of the area is similar to that of the west coast of England and is unusual for this geographical area, suggesting that the unusual properties of the rock are beneficial to many plant species which may often prefer different conditions.
Rock climbing on Southern Sandstone in Sussex is renowned for the relaxed and tranquil forest setting these crags provide. They offer an ideal calm and safe environment in which to break beginners in on the easier routes or to challenge the more seasoned climber with the unorthodox climbing techniques sandstone routes sometimes require.
Rock climbing can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and whether on sandstone, gritstone, limestone or any of the other popular rock types, outdoor rock climbing is a thrilling experience that you will never forget. The adrenaline and subsequent accomplishment upon finishing a climb is an indescribable feeling that will leave you feeling on top of the world!
It is a testament to rock climbing that it is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and many people dedicate their lives to finding the best routes or perfecting their technique for completing the hardest climbs. While most people won’t have the time to give up everything for climbing, it is a great way to keep fit and undertake exercise in an exciting form that you will be happy to continue- rather than doing exercise because you know you should, you will soon be finding time to go climbing and encouraging others along too!
